The X2 and Y2 subclasses are the most commonly used safety certified capacitors. Depending on your own application and requirements, they may be what you want to use. This is assumed because the X2 and Y2 safety capacitors are used in common appliances powered by common household wall sockets. Specifically, you should choose class X and class Y capacitors based on the purpose and requirements of your design.

X2 and Y2 capacitors are suitable for domestic applications, while X1 and Y1 safety capacitors are used in industrial environments. For example, subclass X1 safety capacitors would be used in industrial lighting ballasts connected to three-phase lines.

Of course, you can always use the subclasses X1 and Y1 in non-industrial applications, but you will spend more money, and the larger size may be an inconvenience.

You may ask, can X2 and Y2 safety capacitors be interchanged?

Y2 capacitors can be safely used instead of X2 capacitors, but X2 capacitors should not be used instead of Y2 capacitors. This is because, while an X2 type capacitor is effective in filtering noise, it does not meet line-to-earth safety standards. Y2 safety capacitors are more robust, can withstand higher peak pulse voltages, and are designed to fail open rather than fail short.
